General Summary: The director of transportation is critical for the successful implementation of district-wide safety objectives and efficient transportation for all students.

 

Essential Functions:

  • Develops and administers a transportation program to meet all the requirements of the daily instructional programing and extra-curricular activities
  • Prepares and revises bus routes and schedules for all WCS schools
  • Reviews bus stop locations for safety and efficiency
  • Coordinates with school principals and others responsible for planning special school trips
  • Maintains safety standards in compliance with state and insurance regulations and develops a program of preventive safety
  • Advises appropriate administrative personnel of road conditions for the decision on school closing during inclement weather
  • Recruits, trains and supervises all transportation personnel, making recommendations on their employment, transfer, promotion and release
  • Maintains all district-owned transportation department equipment and develops plans for preventive maintenance
  • Oversees the DOT Random Drug/Alcohol Program for WCS school bus drivers to ensure compliance with federal DOT regulations
  • Verifies and authorizes departmental payroll hours
  • Administers of all relevant statues, state regulations, applicable School Board policy and administrative directives
  • Conducts annual performance appraisals
  • Keeps supervisor informed of potential problems or unusual events
  • Authorizes purchases in accordance with budgetary limitations and district policies
  • Works with CFO to establish building trip budget targets
  • Makes recommendations for future equipment and personnel needs based on a survey of resident students, distances and grade levels
  • Submits all reports required by appropriate state and central office administration
  • Takes an active role in solving discipline problems occurring on school buses
  • Works with parents when special requests or complaints develop
  • Maintains a relationship with transportation or safety organizations including Kosciusko County Local Emergency Preparedness Committee (lEPC), Safe Kids, Transportation Advisory Committee, School Transportation Association of Indiana and National Association for Pupil Transportation
  • Performs other reasonably related duties as assigned by supervisor.

Qualifications:

  • Education – Bachelor’s Degree (preferred)
  • Experience in school transportation preferred. Previous public school experience desired.
  • Must hold a valid driver’s license
  • CDL license preferred or the ability to obtain a CDL license within 90 days of hire
  • Must have documented supervisory experience.
  • Ability to understand and maintain program finances within an assigned budget

Length of Position: Year round (12 months)

Position Type: Exempt/Salaried
