Reports to: Building Principal

 

General Summary: To provide enriching and accelerating experiences for identified elementary students in the high ability classroom; helps classroom teachers with new techniques which can be modified for all students.


Essential Responsibilities:

     • Helps school committees identify high ability students.
     • Gives able students the opportunity to test out of general education curriculum and move on to more advanced concepts.
     • Teaches units developed to stimulate, educate, and interest students in areas not usually covered in regular classrooms.
     • Meets with parents of students who are new to the high ability program.
     • Evaluates students’ accomplishments and communicates this to parents and the appropriate school officials.
     • Establishes communication channels with principals, teachers, parents, and students.
     • Develops and implements a curriculum for high ability students in full-time classrooms.
     • Evaluates student progress continually.
     • Evaluates the identification system used and modifies or expands the system as needed.
     • Evaluates high ability programs and modifies and expands the system as needed.
     • Instructs teachers on new techniques used for high ability which can be modified for all students.
     • Maintains competency in high ability education by visiting other programs, reading, attending conferences, workshops, and taking courses.
     • Participates in corporation meetings, curriculum writing, and activities within high ability areas.
     • Serves as an advocate of high ability education and supports programs in this area.
     • Encourages, urges, and provides parents with information about opportunities for high ability children.
     • Performs other duties as assigned at the request of the superintendent, superintendent designee, or principal.
     • Maintains confidentiality as defined within the policy and procedure manual.


Qualifications

     • Education – Bachelor’s Degree (minimum)
     • Certification or Licensure – Valid Indiana Teaching License.
     • Desired: Indiana High Ability Endorsement (preferred)
     • Experience – Evidence of success as a highly effective classroom teacher.
     • Knowledge – Understanding of collaborative learning teams and effective instructional practices, standards, formative and summative assessments, and ways to disseminate derived data.


Full Time: 185 days
