EDUCATIONAL INTERPRETER FOR DEAF/HOH
Reports to: Assistant Director of Special Services
General Summary: The Educational Interpreter substitute facilitates communication among deaf and hard-of-hearing students and their hearing peers, teachers, and other personnel involved in the student’s education.
Essential Functions:
- Interprets all language during class instructions/interruptions, social and academic settings, direct/indirect conversations, assemblies, and field trips.
- Educates staff regarding the functions of an interpreter within the classroom.
- Previews lesson plans in order to interpret concepts clearly and accurately.
- Fosters a culture of open communication.
- Understands that corporation policies supersede other organizations’ code of ethics and appropriately applies when necessary.
- Maintains licensure, while pursuing professional growth and development.
- Alters register to accommodate student’s current skill level, while building more complex language vocabulary.
- Establish the physical setting for successful interpreting, while encouraging the constant growth of independence.
- Assists in assessing the student’s receptive and expressive language skills. Performs other reasonably related duties as assigned by supervisor.
- Maintains confidentiality as defined within the policy and procedure manual.
Qualifications:
- Education – High School Diploma or GED
- Passage of the EIPA written test and a score of 3.5 or higher on the EIPA skill test or proof of RID certification.
Length of Position: 180 days
