Reports to: Director of Transportation
General Summary: The Assistant Director of Transportation is critical for the successful, safe and efficient transportation system to meet all the requirements of the daily instructional program and extracurricular activities for all eligible students. The person must have the skills, knowledge and sensitivities for facilitating discussion and decision-making.
Essential Functions:
- Knowledge of all appropriate Indiana and Federal Law, State Board of Education and Warsaw Community Schools rules and regulations related to transportation
- Responsible for administering timely corrective actions
- Support Director in the development and enforcement of departmental policies and directives.
- Works collaboratively with the building principals.
- Prepares and updates route for all Warsaw Community Schools (WCS) in the district including special school trips
- Advises Director and district administrators of potential road hazards during inclement weather and taking appropriate action to ensure safety of all children and staff
- Extensive knowledge of district boundaries, schools and neighborhoods
- Exhibit knowledge of routing and GPS systems and the ability to retrieve pertinent information
- Assists in the recruiting and supervision of bus drivers and assistants
- Assists with the development and implementation strategies for the Transportation Department
- Assists in the administration and supervision of all phases of the department
- Monitors performance and conducts regular performances evaluations and coaching for performance improvement
- Ensures all bus drivers have the proper certifications to operate a school bus
- Partners with Human Resources to recruit and hire qualified candidates to ensure all positions are filled in a timely manner
- Provides driver education programs and coordinates training for special needs drivers and assistants
- Takes an active role in solving discipline problems occurring on the school bus
- Works with Principals to resolve student transportation issues
- Assists the Director in meeting needs of Special Needs students
- Works with the Director to enhance and develop ongoing and collaborative relationships with internal and external customers to ensure the safety of all WCS children, employees and the surrounding communities
- Assists with all reports required by state and federal authorities
- Assists in tracking and preparing the departments’ annual budget
- Participates in continuous and ongoing professional development to keep abreast of current trends, state and federal regulations concerning school bus transportation and current school programs
- Conducts other duties as assigned by the Director of Transportation in order to ensure effective and efficient transportation needs
- Performs other reasonably-related duties as may be assigned
Qualifications:
- Bachelor degree (preferred)
- Prior experience working in a transportation department and with the public
- Minimum of five years leadership and/or supervisory experience
- Ability to cope with situations courteously and tactfully
- Ability to react calmly and to take appropriate action under stressful conditions
- The attributes of an efficacious learner: resourceful, self–directed, responsible, problem solver and skilled communicator.
- The development, implementation and management of complex system-wide projects.
- Exhibiting patience, courtesy, respect, ethical conduct and tact when dealing with all people.
- Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate orally and in written form to provide sound and equitable judgment on decisions relating to Warsaw Community Schools’ buildings and grounds
- Knowledgeable of, understands and is up-to-date on current laws, regulations (state and federal) and issues affecting bus licensing and safety
- Holds or ability to obtain a CDL with passengers.
